Ultimate Guitar App Re-Design

As part of a WWU Design class, I was asked to re-design and create a prototype for an app in order to improve its usability. I chose to focus on Ultimate Guitar, an app for learning and playing instruments.

This page highlights pieces of this study, which included competitor research, surveys, user profiles, extensive iteration of site designs and wireframing, and the production of a rough prototype on Figma (linked below).

Ultimate Guitar is by far the most commonly used resource for string instrument musicians to learn songs, but the app fails to offer its users the ease of use and simplicity that they need most. The original app has strong branding and great content, but the organization of that content makes it confusing to use. Ultimate Guitar is set up similarly to a social media platform, but it also attempts to offer a huge number of tools and features that are difficult to find because of their quantity and poor organization.

My re-designed app addresses these problems with a more user-centered design, customizable features, easier access to the most important features, and by better representing the app's actual usership.
