Battery Packaging Re-Design

For this project---part of a WWU design course---I was asked to create new packaging for an existing product that focused on solving a specific design problem. I chose to improve the packaging for AAA Batteries, focusing on sustainable design.

Sustainable design in packaging is usually focused on how to improve the environmental impacts of packaging production and disposal. However, I believe that sustainable design should be taken a step furhter by encouraging consumers to develop more sustainable habits in their consumption of products themselves. These two goals guided my process with this project

In their existing packaging, most people who buy batteries are forced to keep them in kitchen junk drawers or plastic baggies--alongside single use items like food that are quickly consumed and disposed of. I wanted to reframe how batteries are conceived by designing packaging that allows them to be stored in places where their value is more explicit, such as with a CD or book collection

I also wanted the packaging to provide opportunities for easy recycling of batteries, so the front half of the book is an area to collect empty batteries before it is torn off and recycled. The new batteries are snugly packaged in trays in the back. In addition, the packaging itself is made of 100% recyclable 100lb card stock
